"Just Like Heaven"
"Show me how you do that trick
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you
I'll run away with you"
Spinning on that dizzy edge
I kissed her face and kissed her head
And dreamed of all the different ways I had
To make her glow
"Why are you so far away?" she said
"Why won't you ever know that I'm in love with you
That I'm in love with you"
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Strange as angels
Dancing in the deepest oceans
Twisting in the water
You're just like a dream
Daylight licked me into shape
I must have been asleep for days
And moving lips to breathe her name
I opened up my eyes
And found myself alone alone
Alone above a raging sea
That stole the only girl I loved
And drowned her deep inside of me
You
Soft and only
You
Lost and lonely
You
Just like heaven
The one that makes me scream" she said
"The one that makes me laugh" she said
And threw her arms around my neck
"Show me how you do it
And I promise you I promise that
I'll run away with you

Still I Rise Essay Assignment
Final typed and printed papers are due at the beginning of class on Tuesday. A Vocabulary test will follow.
Read the poem and annotate the rhetorical devices and
strategies the author uses throughout.
In a well-written essay explain the purpose/message of the
poem and how Maya Angelou uses rhetorical language to convey this message.
Be sure to write a thesis statement in the first paragraph
that serves as a map for the rest of your paper.
Ex. Maya Angelou uses ___________,_____________, and
________________, to establish a clear message and portray a clear purpose of
________________________ and _______________________ in her poem entitled,
Still I Rise.
Still I Rise, by Maya
Angelou
You may write me down in
history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.
Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.
Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.
Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.
Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.
You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?
Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

Sample Essay:
In order to convey her message of overcoming adversity and defying the status
quo, Maya Angelou used similes, imagery, metaphors and
rhetorical questions to
portray a defiant and
confidant persona and serve as a role model for others in her situation.
Maya wrote this poem as a way to
confront her oppressors. She illustrated her confidence and defiance against
the norms of society by using imagery that went against everything that was
typical of her time. She contradicted common opinion with phrases like, “oil wells pumping in my living
room,” and “certainty of tides” because women of color were seen as poor, weak, and worthless, but she
walked into a room with the air of authority and purpose, and according to this
poem, she challenged their preconceived notions and buried them “in the very dirt.”
Using similes and metaphors, Maya
compared her confidence, pride, and self-respect to “diamonds,” and “gold.”
She did this to show that no
matter what, she knew and understood her worth, despite the effect that her
“sassiness” and “sexiness” had
on others. She showed no concern for their discomfort at her “haughtiness,”
because she understood that she
served as a representative for all people living a similar life. She alluded to the history of the
slaves, in order to
demonstrate that she was not taking their struggles in vain, and she asked the
readers several rhetorical questions to engage them in an argument that she’d
already won. When she
asks them if “[they] want to see her broken,” she is requiring them to evaluate their motives, and by comparing
herself to an ocean “leaping
and wide,” Maya allowed
her adversity and accomplishments to be all encompassing.
She repeatedly stated the phrase, “I rise,” as this was her
most important message. She
would not be held down. She would not allow it. From the past, from the pain,
from “history’s shame,”
she would come out on
top. This poem served as Ms. Angelou’s war anthem, and she wrote it with a
fierceness and a passion that conveyed her message and proved to be an
inspiration for not only women of color, but for oppressed people everywhere.

Inform, Persuade, Satire
11th
Grade: Your speeches and videos will be shown in class this Friday. The
community service fair will take place next week.
Today:
Differences between writing styles: Expository vs. Persuasion vs. Satire
Inform is
along the lines of a research paper, text book excerpt, news broadcast or
article
Persuasion
is involving argument and evidence to support an opinion. This can be seen in
debates, trials, editorials, etc.
Satire
usually involves the sarcastic or humorous interpretation of an event or issue
while trying to prove a point or ridicule a person or idea. (Saturday Night
Live, Political Cartoons, etc.)
Topic: Police
Brutality and Violence
Informational:
A Brazilian street dancer was fatally shot today in a
neighboring community of Rio de Janeiro. Police mistook the dancer for a member
of one of the several violent drug cartels in the area. They claim they were
forced to shoot once the victim became aggressive while being routinely questioned.
Police and government officials have been honing in on the more dangerous areas
of the city in an effort to improve safety and morale for the upcoming World
Cup games next month.
Persuasive:
Police brutality must come to a stop. Often the power-hungry
members of law enforcement are encouraged to single out and victimize citizens
of poorer communities in order to cover up actual problems and issues with a
superficial mask.
A recent example of this took place in Rio de Janeiro, the
home of the upcoming World Cup, a sporting event that will be watched by
millions of people around the globe. Government officials are attempting to “clean-up”
the city, but often at the expense of the innocent and poor. Police murdered a
street dancer from an impoverished burro, claiming he showed aggression towards
members of their force. All the while, the young man who was viciously killed
was unarmed and merely trying to make a living entertaining passersby.
Traumatized and outraged witnesses began to protest, bringing
world-wide attention to the corruptness of the people who are supposed to be
insuring their safety. For when a murder of a human being is declared
acceptable all because a few in power want to make their city “look” nice for a
sporting event, you know something has gone terribly wrong with society.
Satire
Thank God for police! They sure know
how to clean up a city. I mean with the World Cup coming to Brazil, why would millions
of tourists want to be bothered with lively culture, dancers and thrilling
entertainment, while helping a poor man take care of his ailing family. It’s a
good thing the police cleaned up the area after removing the body, because
nobody wants to get blood stains on their new shoes while their out soliciting
prostitutes and getting high off of crack. But again, at least the dead dancer
will be one less mouth for the government to ignore.

Research online for classic or modern transcendentalists. (by modern, I mean people like Chris McCandless who have left society to strike out on their own.) Choose one and create a PPT or Prezi about that person. You must research their life and beliefs and include the following information in your presentation:
* Picture of the person and photos of where they've been
* Personal history of their background
* What led them to follow their specific lifestyle
* Main events in their life
* Your personal thoughts regarding this person
* Play one song that you think represents this person and explain why
Some examples of people you may use are:
Classic: Walt Whitman, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau
Modern: Pat Perry (artist) and Mike Brodie (train hopper and photographer)
